Intellectual Property Audits

A new study from the Business Software Alliance reveals that 35% of the software installed in 2006 on personal computers (PCs) worldwide was obtained illegally, amounting to nearly $40 billion in global losses due to software piracy.  IC2X offers IPR audits for:

  • Software firms site licensing their products.  Site licensing is still one of the most widely used methods of software licensing.  Assuming that you have an audit provision in your license agreement, IC2X will provide and independent, 3rd party certification about your customer's usage activities.  IC2X will also provide the same certification to your client for an additional fee negotiated in advance of the audit.

  • Organizations seeking compliance with their Intellectual Property Rights responsibilities.  Periodically audits are conducted by either firms providing your organization with licensed software or by organizations such as the Business Software Alliance.  The BSA is urging local businesses in the Greater Pittsburgh market to achieve software license compliance during this 31-day period, offering information, tools and resources to help businesses manage their software effectively and without facing penalties. After May 31st, 2007, the “Net” will close in and BSA will begin to investigate the use of unlicensed and illegal software by Pittsburgh businesses.  Additional enforcement programs, both domestically and internationally are being scheduled by BSA, which receives tips via anonymous employee tip programs as well as court mandated audits.

Apart from legal consequences, using copied or counterfeit software also means:

  • Greater exposure to software viruses, corrupt disks, or otherwise defective software;
  • Inadequate or no documentation for your software;
  • Lack of technical support;
  • No software upgrades;
  • Penalties of up to $150,000 for every software title copied.
